About this tool

What Is the Thin Content Finder?

Thin pages rarely rank: a 120-word page can't answer most searches as well as the pages it competes with. The Thin Content Finder crawls your site, counts the words in each page's own text, leaving out menus, headers and footers so the template doesn't pad the number, and ranks every page from the thinnest up against a threshold you choose.

Key Features

Word counts from each page's main content, not its template
Your choice of threshold: 150, 300, 500 or 800 words
A chart of how word counts spread across the site
Thin pages by section, pointing at the templates behind them
Noindexed pages marked, since they need no work
CSV export with each page's word count and shortfall

Word Count Isn't a Ranking Factor, But

No search engine ranks a page on its length. Still, a page with very little text rarely covers a topic well enough to beat the competition, and a site full of thin pages looks low-effort as a whole. Use the count to find pages worth a second look, not as a number to pad toward.

Expand, Merge or Noindex

For each thin page, ask whether it should rank. If it should, expand it with what searchers actually need. If several thin pages cover the same thing, merge them into one strong page and redirect the rest. If it shouldn't rank, like a tag archive or a thank-you page, noindex it and move on.

Common Use Cases

  • Finding near-empty pages before a content refresh
  • Comparing content depth between sections
  • Building a merge-or-expand list for a content audit
  • Checking programmatic pages for enough unique text

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Thin Content Finder free?

Yes. It's free with a ProxyHorizon account, and every account gets 25 runs a day shared across all our data tools. You can read about the tool without signing in, but running it needs an account because each run fetches live data.

How are words counted?

From the page's main content: the <main> element when the page has one, otherwise the body without navigation, header, footer and sidebars. Scripts and styles are ignored.

What threshold should I use?

300 words is a common line for articles. Product and category pages can be useful with less, and long-form guides usually need far more. Try 150 to find pages that are nearly empty.

Do you keep the crawl?

For 24 hours. The crawl behind a report is stored for a day so the other sitewide tools can reuse it for the same site and page limit, instantly and without crawling again. It only holds public pages, so anyone checking the same site that day gets the same crawl. Choose "Crawl again now" whenever you want fresh data. We also log which tool you ran and when, to apply the daily limit.
