Astrill VPN

Astrill VPN is a long-running provider headquartered in the Seychelles that has built its reputation almost entirely on one thing: reliably defeating heavy state censorship. For well over a decade it has been one of the most recommended VPNs for users inside China, where the Great Firewall actively detects and blocks most VPN traffic. Its offshore jurisdiction places it outside the major surveillance alliances.

Astrill's edge is its proprietary obfuscation technology. Its StealthVPN protocol disguises VPN traffic to slip past deep packet inspection, while OpenWeb offers a lightweight browser-focused mode and it also supports WireGuard and OpenVPN. Features such as a per-app and per-site VPN filter, a kill switch, and Smart Mode for selective routing give experienced users fine-grained control. During periods of intense censorship crackdowns, Astrill has historically remained one of the few services that keeps working.

The major drawback is price. Astrill is one of the most expensive consumer VPNs available, with monthly plans well above the industry norm and add-on fees for extras such as a dedicated IP, port forwarding, or additional simultaneous devices. Its no-logs stance is reasonable but less independently audited than some privacy-first rivals, and base plans support relatively few simultaneous connections.

Astrill is best for travelers and residents in heavily censored regions, particularly China, who need a VPN that simply works when others fail and are willing to pay a premium for that reliability. Cost-sensitive users with no censorship concerns will find better value elsewhere.
