Bitdefender VPN is the VPN service from Bitdefender, the highly regarded Romanian cybersecurity company best known for its award-winning antivirus engine. It is offered both bundled with Bitdefender security suites and as a standalone Premium VPN, aimed at users who want a trustworthy, easy VPN from a security brand they already know.

Bitdefender is headquartered in Romania, a jurisdiction outside the Five Eyes and Fourteen Eyes alliances that is generally viewed favorably for privacy. Notably, Bitdefender VPN does not run on its own network: it is powered by Aura's Hotspot Shield infrastructure and the proprietary Catapult Hydra protocol, which delivers strong speeds. The apps include AES-256 encryption, a kill switch, split tunneling, and ad and tracker blocking on Premium tiers.

The free plan is a meaningful draw, offering a daily data allowance for casual use, while the Premium tier removes data caps and adds server choice. Speeds are typically excellent thanks to the Hydra protocol, and the apps are clean and approachable for newcomers.

The main caveats stem from that outsourced backbone: because the network and core protocol are provided by a third party (Aura/Hotspot Shield), Bitdefender controls less of the stack than fully in-house VPNs, and the reliance on the proprietary Catapult Hydra protocol limits open-source transparency and protocol choice. Streaming support is decent but not class-leading. Overall it is one of the stronger antivirus-company VPNs, especially for existing Bitdefender users.
