Hotspot Shield

Hotspot Shield is a long-running consumer VPN now owned by Pango, part of Aura, and based in the United States. It is one of the most widely downloaded VPNs in the world, largely on the strength of its free, ad-supported tier and consistently strong speed-test results driven by its proprietary Catapult Hydra protocol.

The free plan offers a limited daily data allowance (historically around 500 MB per day) with ads and a single US-based location, intended as a funnel toward the Premium subscription. Paid plans remove data caps and ads, unlock the full network of thousands of servers across roughly 80 countries, add up to 10 simultaneous connections, and include features such as a kill switch and split tunneling.

Speed is Hotspot Shield genuine strength. Catapult Hydra, a TLS-based proprietary protocol, frequently tops independent speed benchmarks, especially over long distances. The trade-off is that it is closed-source, so it cannot be independently audited the way WireGuard or OpenVPN can, and privacy-focused users should weigh that against the performance benefit.

Importantly, Hotspot Shield has a documented privacy controversy. In 2017 a complaint was filed with the US Federal Trade Commission by the Center for Democracy and Technology alleging that the free app injected advertising and tracking code and shared data with third parties in ways inconsistent with its privacy promises. Combined with its US jurisdiction, which falls within the Five Eyes alliance, this history means privacy-sensitive users should approach the free tier with caution even though the company has since revised its policies.
