McAfee Secure VPN

McAfee Secure VPN (also known as McAfee Safe Connect) is the virtual private network component built into McAfee's consumer security products, such as McAfee Total Protection and McAfee+. It is made by McAfee, a long-running US-based cybersecurity company, and is aimed squarely at mainstream users who want automatic protection without configuring anything.

The service is rarely sold as a standalone product; instead it is bundled with McAfee's antivirus suites, which is both its biggest convenience and its biggest limitation. Because McAfee is US-based, the VPN operates under US jurisdiction and the Five Eyes alliance. The apps use bank-grade AES-256 encryption and can auto-connect when you join an unsecured Wi-Fi network, which suits the casual security-suite buyer well.

McAfee positions the VPN around safety rather than power-user features. Its hallmark is the auto-connect-on-untrusted-Wi-Fi behavior, plus integration with McAfee's broader identity and antivirus tools. The infrastructure has historically relied on third-party VPN technology rather than a fully in-house network.

The downsides are familiar for antivirus-company VPNs: a modest and largely undisclosed server footprint, limited manual controls, narrow protocol options, and weak or unreliable streaming and torrenting performance. As a no-fuss layer of privacy inside a security subscription it does the job, but dedicated VPNs offer far more capability and transparency.
