Anonymous Proxy

An anonymous proxy hides your real IP address from websites but still reveals that a proxy is being used.

Definition

An anonymous proxy is a proxy server that conceals your real IP address from the websites you visit while still identifying itself as a proxy. It sits in the middle of the three classic anonymity levels: less revealing than a transparent proxy but not as stealthy as an elite (high-anonymity) proxy.

How anonymous proxies work

When you connect, the proxy strips out or masks the header that would normally expose your real IP, such as X-Forwarded-For. However, it typically still sends a header like Via or Proxy-Connection, so the destination can tell a proxy is involved even though it cannot see who you are.

Why it matters

  • IP privacy keeps your true location hidden from most sites and trackers.
  • Proxy detectability means anti-bot systems may still flag or challenge the connection.
  • Good balance for everyday privacy where total stealth is not required.

Anonymous proxies suit general browsing, light geo-unblocking, and bypassing simple content filters. For scraping sites with strict anti-bot defenses, an elite proxy that hides the proxy entirely is the stronger choice.

Examples

1

A proxy that removes your X-Forwarded-For header but still sends a Via header

2

A browser-configured proxy for hiding your IP while reading geo-blocked news

3

A datacenter proxy advertised as 'anonymous level' rather than 'elite'

Common Use Cases

Hiding your real IP during everyday browsing
Bypassing basic geo-restrictions and content filters
Adding a privacy layer over public Wi-Fi
Light scraping of sites without aggressive bot detection

Frequently Asked Questions

No. It hides your real IP address, but it still sends headers that reveal a proxy is in use. For full stealth you need an elite or high-anonymity proxy.
It can work for sites with weak defenses, but advanced anti-bot systems detect the proxy headers and may block or challenge you, so elite proxies are safer.
Both hide your IP, but a VPN usually encrypts all device traffic, while an anonymous proxy typically only routes specific app or browser traffic without strong encryption.
